End of Monday Report
Feb. 13th, 2006 05:38 pmWell, I’m still here, though I’m feeling rather drained and I’ve got my Dutch homework to do tonight; its not ‘bad’ or anything, but its certainly enough of a mental drain when I’ve still got stack-loads to do. Standby for a panicked LJ post later on today… :o)
In other, news, this last week has seen Carole and myself catching up with each other, talking about lots of little things that we never got to over the Christmas / New Year / Birthday season – little stuff like planning the next few weeks & months, holidays, diets, work, people etc. It’s the ability to just sit down & relax & thrash out ideas in the comfort of my own home without having to give a hoot what anyone else things that I’d missed most of all.
We also committed ourselves to starting the weight loss drive today, so the weight is now 84.5kg, despite last weeks stated policy of news management, but, tbh, I genuinely think that it might be down a smidgeon, so instead of rounding up, I’m rounding down. Sue me.
What else? I’ve almost finished ‘Revelation Space’; its wandered between a ‘very rich description of humanity on theoretical colony worlds’ but its now (sadly) verging on ‘contrived’ with the author trying too hard to get all the sub-plots climaxing at the same time. This mainly manifestes itself as dun-duh-DUH! style cliff-hanger chapter endings & characters wanting to do stuff, finding a reason not to & then doing it anyway. I can excuse this repeatedly, but to have as a recurring structure is a touch irritating, especially when something is written as a cliff-hanger, and then the character blithely ignores the cliff entirely. Despite this slating, I’ve whipped through almost 400 pages of it, so the author is blatantly doing something right. Overall, I’d describe it as “reminiscent of Nights Dawn trilogy, in its style & subject matter, but not as good“
Right then. Back to it, I guess.
