Thursday lunchtime & counting...
Mar. 9th, 2006 01:35 pmHmm. Last night, my computer problems went from ‘niggling’ to ‘concerning’; when C was out, my machine wouldn’t shut down – at all. It simply hung claiming that windows explorer couldn’t shut down as it couldn’t locate something. I’ve done a backup of all my files, and I’m going to stick the Windows 2000 disk in it and try to run some diagnostics, but its bl**dy infuriating that its playing up again – but its fortunate that its happened after the returns are out! Suggestions & advice on this is most welcome from the great beyond.
Aside from that, its been a colossally busy morning. On top of the usual stuff, I’m pleased with myself as I’ve managed to do about 45 minutes of Dutch bashing, which I consider to be a success. ‘Dutch bashing’ is (effectively) writing out ‘lines’ – it’s slow, inefficient, and a pain (in the wrist), bit its the only method I’ve come across that works for me when it comes to learning another language – simply drilling the words in, one letter at a time. Obviously, I’d like to be able to do what Carole does and ‘just pick up a textbook and become fluent in 6 weeks by simply being in the presence of the language’ but that doesn’t seem to work for my brain, so its tedium all the way. Still, I’ll get there. As with German, when I got ‘my first 200 words’ sorted out, I was then in a position to follow conversations. That’s where I want to get to by the end of the year. I should be able to do it…
Also, in related news, we’ve got a basic shopping list of Dutch specialities that people want us to bring over – speak up if you want to add stuff on the list & we’ll carry it through for you! (Legal stuff only, please!)
Right then. Only 5 more hours to go & then that’s today done, putting me less than 24 hours away from my holiday. Yay! On the down site, I’m busy for a reason – lots to be done before I get a chance to escape… but at least I don’t have time to get bored.
