Friday I had a quiet night in, waiting for C to come home, whilst waiting I watched a DVD of the Truman show, which I’ve not seen for a while. It was a good – if somewhat lonely – evening.

On Saturday C & I cycled into town and generally had a good time; we went past a house that looked vaguely tempting, only to find that it was – actually – beside a 4-lane road, so was significantly less interesting than the ad had made it out to be. After a bite to eat in Subways (thank god they’ve opened here), we watched the Devil Wears Prada, which was very good, if not laugh-out-loud funny. Anyway, we did a spot of shopping, tried to avoid the rain & then cycled home. In the evening, we went over to Alex & Rinnike’s for a party; we gave them Vinci & a bottle of wine & then proceeded to hijack the party with game related nonsense. We finally left at 3am, rather drunk.

On Sunday (surprisingly) I was intermediately hung-over, so we went to Wagamamas and ate copious amounts of vegetables. From there we walked around town & found a few shops that looked very interesting (a UK / US food shop & a place that sells hats). After ogling the wares (wares, dammit – there was no ‘H’ in that word), we headed to the Tara bar to meet up with the “Meet in” crowd for a get-together. Guinness occurred. After a few hours of chat, we took a tram out to a fireworks party held in one of the large parks here in Amsterdam, where we found – much to our surprise – that the British Empire is in fact alive & well. There were bonfires, banners, bunting & all manner of things beginning with B, as well as other letters. We circulated, bought British Legion Poppys, were tempted to join the British Society, ate toffee-apples, had sparklers & I became broody (I wont try to deny it, I am very broody at present).

Whist there, I got into a very interesting conversation with an American gentleman about Bush & the mid-term elections. He held out the idea that “Nothing good will come of Bush” & “Bush sucks”. I countered with the argument that “Bush is such a reactionary President & given his record, there has been such a ground-swell of popular opinion against the neo-con anti-liberal agenda that the US political field has shifted. The “we don’t need allies” attitude espoused by the current Administration wont wash anymore & a globalist / cooperative sentiments are becoming apparent – from dealing with China about North Korea to California & the North Eastern States cooperating (on a global scale) on environmental issues. Bush has forced these agendas to the mainstream & has discredited neocon-ism. For that he is probably a necessary evil”. It rather took his breath away, especially as I was a) coherent b) rather sozzled & c) quite forceful. Jim then raised the prospect that Bush has early-onset Alzheimer’s (http://kevincassell.com/PERSON/POLITICS/left/bush.htm). Interesting reading. Anyway, after the fireworks, we took the tram home, collapsing into bed at 8-30pm(ish), feeling as though it was closer to 2am.

C left at 6am (fun) & I wont see her until Friday evening (Excellent. Not.) at the earliest as she could be away for 2 weeks solid. I found out that my weight is still 87 kilos - unchanged from last week (if memory serves). I’ve decided that I’m bloody well going to loose this weight. I’ve just go to; I’ve not been able to shake off the post-Spiel bloating & I have a sneaking suspicion that I’ve upset my equilibrium sufficiently that I’m now on a long-term weight gain trend. Which is just double-plus not good, especially when I’m going to New York in less than 2 weeks time. I’m tempted to reward myself with the hat if / when I get down to 80 kilos.

Why? I don’t know. I just like hats.

I also found out that most of the houses I wanted to have a look at had now gone off the market (AGAIN), except for one, which is under offer, so they cant even show it to me. Grr.
