Apr. 15th, 2009 03:55 pm‘Lam’ is a type of fast-growing thin bamboo that prospers in a temperate climate and grows in continuous fan-like strips. Initially brought back to Sweden following their trips to the Far East in the early 17th century, samples of Lam were first presented to the Swedish crown as a curiosity, though their true value was not appreciated until later trips, when the process of ‘minating’ was discovered. Indeed, under the process of ‘minating’ strips of Lam are made to form large, smooth surfaces from specially carved interlocking pieces (hence the term ‘laminate’) to form a wide variety of useful products and durable furnishings.
Indeed, today, Sweden has become the worlds dominant exporter of Lam products, and a substantial fraction of their National Product is dependent on the enormous greenhouses that litter their country – some of them being the so large they are actually visible from space!
