It’s a miracle. In an attempt to pretend to be normal, we both C & I went into our respective offices –partially because we need normality & also partially because we need the goodwill of our respective employers. Banality is the oil that greases our existence, though I feel I deserve a medal for this effort.

So I’m in. I’m even vaguely productive, apparently. I’ve done stuff that has value, and will get on with some more stuff later on. I couldn’t tell you what the stuff was, or whether it was done correctly, but I’m doing stuff. Later I shall probably do more stuff.

In the midst of all the gloom, I’ve been in contact with the organisation that provides childcare places; they have confirmed that Caitlin would not be eligible to attend a regular nursery as this would represent an unnecessary risk to the other children, which is entirely understandable. On the plus side, they have advised me that, given these circumstances, we would be eligible for private childcare which I’m glad to report is heavily subsidized here in the Netherlands, so it falls into the ‘affordable’ category, but it is still very pricey. I guess that this means that our intentions for the pair of us to only work 4 days a week have now gone by the board, but me working 5 days a week is hardly the largest burden in the world and it seems churlish to complain.

Moreover, as agreed with C last night, we have to assume that Caitlin is going to make it as it gives us something to work towards. Anything other than this and we just give up. We recognise that we might not remain members of the lucky people club as events progress, but we have to assume that we will, for now.
