Scan Results
Mar. 11th, 2010 10:53 amWe have just come back from the first scan, and we do not have the result that we wanted. Essentially, they could not detect a heartbeat and also the foetus is noticeably smaller than they would have estimated, given the dates.
Whilst this does strengthen the probability of a missed miscarriage, they were at pains to point out that this could still be perfectly normal, and that the foetus could just be a slow developer. Indeed, they mentioned repeatedly that they had seen both outcomes, positive and negative.
As such, they recommend that we make an appointment with Leiden on Monday (as we're in the hospital), so that, when we have the genetic results, we can get an updated - in depth - ultrasound scan. The chances are that, if we see a heartbeat then, then everything is fine. If not, then the probability that the foetus is dead increases. Still, we have also rebooked a second scan with the midwives for 2 weeks today - that should give us a definitive result, one way or the other.
Whilst we are still trying to remain optimistic, we have been told that we have a 50/50 chance that this will still result in a healthy baby. I quizzed them at length on probabilities of outcome (ie 'more like to be healthy? Or less likely?') but they could not give any information other than 50/50.
It doesn't stop me feeling as though the roof has caved in *again*, though.

EDIT: Sod it. I still remain optimistic. C is pregnant until proven otherwise.
