Back in Amsterdam...
Jul. 30th, 2006 08:24 pm...and Superman (the 1970's version) is on the TV. Cant imagine why...
I dread to think what the weight is, as this is the only day that I've not had a drink in the last week. But I'm pretty well rested & even (astoundingly) looking forward to work tomorrow. I guess I must be sick - perhaps its sun-stroke? Also, I'm glad to report that the weather has come down to a much more tolerable mid-20's. Right then. Back to unpacking & sorting!

The holiday was really fantastic; it was great to see & catch up with so many of our friends in Germany that we've missed for almost 2 years. Also, we did some pretty cool things: going to Legoland Germany, riding in an open-topped car in a beautiful evening (the heady life, eh?) climbing up a hill to a monastery, sailing down the Danube, walking through the English Garden in Munich, attending a (small) Oktoberfest - all done whilst I also managed to read both 'Gullivers Travels' (including the footnotes & commentary) and 'A Fire Upon the Deep' by Vernon Vinge. I also secured an 'agreement in principle' from Carole to get a digital Camera - but the purchase will have to wait some time, until the full costs come through on the credit-cards! In all, a truly excellent time.
The only downside of the entire trip was staying with some acquaintances in Munich; not only did they fight pretty much every minute we were there, her sulking coupled with his nascent alcoholism & repeated slagging off of the Germans (as in "comparing them to Nazi's" - and shes German, incidentally) rather put an edge on whatever activity we were doing at the time. On more than one occasion, I felt really rather threatened when he would make these comments, and the atmosphere in the beer-garden would get a little bit frosty - and its much worse when one of your hosts turns to you & says 'you're in on a joke, because you're English & I'm really offended'! Talk about fraught social situations! Still, we survived, but I'll be darned if I willingly stay there again!
