Was exchanging emails with Matt with a starwars theme & I liked it, so I decided to share...

OOC - I suspect that the entire "hand waving" thing might work on the crowd, but I doubt that it would work on someone whos got his arm chopped off...

On the other hand, no police officer in their right mind would want to arrest a Jedi. Attack them with hordes of killer robots, perhaps, but arrest them? Naah. Perhaps thats the reason why the trade federation is so narked off with them - they keep on shoplifting! Episode 3: The Revenge of the petty officialdom

Spurred on by years of
refusal by the Jedi to pay parking
fines, and indeed for anything that they fancy,
a dark alliance of storkeepers have arisen to challenge
the supremacy of the Jedi & force them to pay the entirety of the
backdated rent. After initial moderate measures met with failure, (hover-car
clamps proving to be ineffectual), angry officialdom have created a vast army of
robots lead by Darth Reeve, the Chancellors personal tax collector, to make the jedi pay...

Frankly, I’m disappointed; I had rather hoped that the church would choose someone who would reach out to other people and seize the moral agenda on (eg) social justice, poverty, third world debt and the like, but it appears that I’m wrong. Instead, we now have an arch-conservative who will continue the centralising tendency of the church and continue the worst elements (and frankly morally questionable) policies of JP2 such as forcing people to choose between HIV & their immortal souls – even those who live in a committed relationship, where one person has become HIV+ through no fault of his / her own...

On the other hand, he’s 78 so perhaps there’s another agenda in play here… A Pope cannot contradict the teachings of his immediate predecessor so perhaps those who want to make the church more relevant to the modern world have decided to put in place a stop-gap who can fill JP2s shoes for a few years so that in 5 years time (or whatever) someone else could be elected. Either way, I suspect that the next conclave will last a lot longer than the election of Benedict.

I still would have preferred a Pontiff that was more accessible than the cold intellectual that Ratzinger is reputed to be, though. And its high time that someone who was not a European gets the call. I might be misjudging him, but I have no reason to think that he will not remain true to type and retian his belief that AIDS is just another example of “relativism” - a tragedy that will cost the world another few thousand lives per year for the next decade or so.

I am reminded of a quote: there is more to leadership than simply standing athwart history and screeching STOP!
