2 things, firstly, I've just had an email from a job offer I attended about 2 months ago in Malton. They've basically said "the other guy has dropped out - are you still interested?", so I'm rather up in the air about this: long commute (probably too long) but its a permanent job. Hmm. Dont know. Its tempting, but its distant...

Also, just been talking with C about the forthcoming election. The prospect of a Tory defeat was raised, and it highlighted something about the Tories that they need to resolve: basically their current inability to deal with defeat. I think that the main test for the Tories will come from adversity - if they fail this time, but succumb to the instinct to exterminate the shadow cabinet & airbrush them out of history, then I dont think that they've learned the lesson & will be instinctively seen as being vaguely immature by the nation.

Otoh, if the Tories go "hell, we've been handed our arse by the public again, but we're in this for the long term, so lets keep fighting" & keep the shadow cabinet together without going on a spate of blood-letting then I think that the public will be more forgiving of them.

I also happen to think that this is quite probably the second-to-last election the Tories have got as the main opposition party (if they dont shape up). If the reports on Newsnight tonight are true & Tory central office is, at time of writing, tonight celebrating the fact that they've done "as well as William Hague in the 2001 election" (with a Labour majority of 160+), then this really *is* a sign of circling vultures...

Righty ho. Off to bed to think of reasons why & why not to take the Malton role. And when to vote - am or pm?

Weighty decisions, I'm sure you appreciate.
