highs & lows
May. 5th, 2005 12:29 pm...today I have mostly been on an emotional roller coaster...
The offer of a permanent job in Malton has spurred both me & the agency into making long, convoluted & occasionally frustrated queries. I've decided that getting to Malton by car is not an option (it was originally as we'd not had the windows done, so we could have got a car outright then - but not anymore). Essentially, we'd have to buy a car on finance (£200 per month), fuel it (a further £200 per month, given the distance involved), park it (£5 a day - or £100 a month) - total additional cost of "about £300" extra a month in expenses. Not to mention the hassle involved of getting out of the house at 6am to get there in time. Overall - a non starter. So I told the girl that it wasn't going to happen.
Then I was told that the place could be got to by train by a former employee of the office in question; his experience was that he could get on the train at leeds station & be there 40 minutes later. Yay! Sounds good! Many frantic searches later, preformed both on line & also by phone (including to the worlds most usless Indian call-centre. Ever. "I'm going from Bramley to Malton". "You want me to spell them? Sure: B-R-A-M-L-E-Y"..."No B, for Bertie" "BEEE". "No Not a P! B!". NO, not A DEE, A BEE! etc"
Overall... er. Yes, but only if I want to get a 6-30am train & get there for 7-55am, cos the next train, bizzarely, doesnt run for 2 hours. I mean, who'd want to get on a train between the hours of 8am & 9? What sort of weirdo, eh?
So it looked possible for a while. Note, not "good", "possible".
Then I was reminded that the office in Malton is being moved, from "just around the corner from the train station" to "20 minutes by car up the road, towards leeds". At the time, it was good news - less distance to travel - but now, it means that the inconvenient series of train journeys would have to be capped off by an inconvenient bus trip.
So thats a "no" then.
Hey ho. Easy come, easy go. At least I've got the ENP tonight to look forward to.
