Interesting...
Feb. 10th, 2006 01:07 pmWell, today is interesting; a full-blown management restructuring is taking place over the next 2 months & will see my boss change jobs, as well as my bosses boss. I feel… peculiar, a combination of uncertain, vaguely positive & spoilt for choice. As I see it I have 3 options, all of them vaguely positive & appealing on some level:
1) Apply for my bosses old job, which would be so far out of my comfort zone that you couldn’t detect it with a radio telescope & I don’t think I’d get in anyway – but it would demonstrate that I’m interested in the possibility of promotion. As a ‘political move’ it would be interesting, but I don’t think that it’s a viable plan – but I want to talk to my boss about it before I make a final decision.
2) Sit tight & build up my role & become invaluable to the new boss, whoever that will be. I suspect I know a strong candidate & if she got the role then it would be both interesting and pretty good for the career. I also think that I could work pretty well with everyone too, so… yeah, this option is the ‘no change, no stress’ option.
3) Carve out a new niche. The role my boss is going to is a very heavy project / analysis position, which is (by his own admission) not very good at & he’s already told me that hes going to be maintaining close links with me. I suspect that there is a niche waiting to be formed to be filled. Um. If you catch my drift. This is the most appealing option for me…
On balance, the most likely option is that I’ll apply for Ians job, not get it, settle into my current position to support the new person and slowly carve out a new role working for my old boss.
In other news, I went out to the team meal last night. It was exceptionally pleasant, despite my headache at the start of the evening. I had a very pleasant night out with my colleagues, and ordered stuff that I wouldn’t normally, which made it both different and excellent. In addition, as my (soon to be ex-) boss is a regular there, we got a load of gratuities from the house including a starter of lobster, which was actually quite pleasant, really. Who knows, I might even order it in future. (Like I routinely go to restaurants that serve lobster!)
