Lunchtime postcards from the damp place.
Feb. 17th, 2006 01:58 pmWell, so far so good, I guess. I’ve managed to get all the audit queries out of the way, fixed & generally resolved to everyones satisfaction. This has taken most of the last few days, but its done & dusted now. Sadly it means that the other work that was sat on my desk has built up to a near dangerous level, so I’ve got a load to get through before I go home tonight. Bah.
I’ve also used the Christmas Amazon voucher C & I got to buy the Firefly series and also pre-order Serenity, so I consider that to be a ‘good thing’, though I’m not happy with the Amazon money management system; the voucher value was £40 and I bought £27-odd worth of stuff, but instead of it saying, “yes, you still have £12-ish left” it said “amount owed £1.47” which was a little disconcerting. After punching the F2 button to refresh the page a few times it came back to say “amount owed £0.00”, but I cant say that I have much confidence in the website. Still and all, I’ve bought the things (or at least I think I have), but I’ve not been able - in my 60 second look at the website - to find out the option of how much money I’ve got in my account, though I might check later.
Carole is away in the UK for the day – with any luck, I’ll get to see her tonight before I fall asleep, but I suspect that the chances are pretty remote, so its going to be an evening dedicated to sitting at the computer & trying to finish the returns. It is a peculiar thing, doing returns, in that its like writing a story whilst still drawing on other peoples stories, so its never entirely clear where the ideas come from. Also, its not something that you can just ‘sit down and do’ – there’s a lot of comparing & re-reading and trying to remember whose orders impact on this & how it would affect that and so on - its unbelievably time consuming, and I‘ve been getting comments from C recently along the lines of ‘I never get to see you’ – though I believe that this is partly brought about as we now no longer see each other on Tuesday & Wednesday nights thanks to our respective Dutch courses.
Tbh, I’m not sure how serious her complaints are; the comments seem light-hearted enough, but their frequency leads me to think otherwise. So, for any players out there, an announcement: under no circumstances am I going to jeopardise my relationship with my wife over something as trivial as a game. On the other hand, it’s a hobby that I enjoy doing & its more stimulating than watching TV – but it’s also something that has to be done in relative isolation. I suspect that, if it ever threatened to become a ‘serious’ problem I would be informed in no uncertain terms (at least I hope so) but… well lets hope that I can manage my time more effectively to keep everyone happy.
