It’s a touch on the quiet side, in that most departments are frantically trying to prepare account reconciliations (I’ve done mine *coughs modestly*), and the pressure is now on – because they didn’t read the many & varied emails that were sent out over the last 3 weeks; the computer systems are down & are not available this week. Which means that I’ve had a queue of people pleading with me (some actually on bended knee) to provide them with assistance – sadly, I cant. Even my access has been taken away & there is nothing I can do about it. Hence the feverish silence.

The weekend was pretty quiet – the high points included us wandering around Amstelveen, a prospective place where we might consider buying a house. Its not exactly pretty down there, in fact, “faceless & grey” seems to have been the intention of the designer – and he pulled it off very well. Needless to say, I’m not exactly sold on the prospect of moving there, but a) it is close b) it is conveniently serviced by decent transport links to my work & c) it has properties that we could imagine ourselves to live in within our price range, which means that if we find something vaguely appropriate, then we could find ourselves living there. I’m not enthusiastic, but I would tolerate it for the amount of money that we would stop wasting, but I’m hoping that there would be a better option.

Anyway, after that, we went off to the Hash meet to bid adieu to a woman I’ve apparently met before. She turned up 3 months ago from New Mexico & decided within 72 hours that shes had enough of the rain, thank you very much. Some people just cant stand a little drizzle – mind you, I don’t think I could tolerate 45-degree heat for months at a time either, so it balances out, I suppose. We stared out until 12-30 & got the last tram home – a very pleasant evening..

Today Carole left the house relatively on time & called me about an hour later to tell me that she was in Rotterdam. Some miserably oik has (apparently) stolen the railways overhead power cables thus preventing connections from Amsterdam to Eindhoven, necessitating a massive diversion. I’m not entirely sure that this story is correct, given the logistics involved (power cables? Overhead ones? That power trains? Being stolen??), but that seems to be the situation. If true, then it would appear that crime over here is broadly the same as in the UK – just a lot more concentrated…

Oh yes, almost forgot – the post Christmas weigh-in has me at 89 kilos, possibly the heaviest I’ve been for a while. Disappointing.
