Quick update
Oct. 2nd, 2009 09:00 pmCaitlin Elizabeth Parkinson was born at 6-55pm today. She made it through the first 10 minutes or so relatively ok, but was taken to ICU at the 15 minute mark as her oxygen stats dropped significantly. She has recived an ultrasound, and the cardiologist has confirmed that her condition is something that he's never really seen before; a combination of several usually unrelated items. As such, the surgery is going to long, complex and very very risky. Presently, due to her low oxygen stats, I've been asked to leave ICU as they have to intubate her and they dont allow parents there when this happens. They are also considering other, more invasive procedures to help stabilise her as there is the question of an obstruction in the pulmonary veins, but the general conclusion is that, if she can get through the next 24 hours, then she has a fighting chance. I just hope and pray that her oxygen stats stabilise.
C has just left the operating theatre - I'm informed that this is a precautionary measure she had (if I understand this correctly) some retained placenta, and this is to make sure that nothing adverse comes of this. She has, apparently, lost 2 litres of blood - but she's stable, and expected to be on the ward in about 30 minutes.

Katies stats have been stabilised; she's a bit low (oxygen % in the 70-85% range), but is both stable & sufficiently oxygenated to be significantly out of the danger range ie 'well above 60% ish'.
C has also returned from surgery, she's awake and overjoyed to be with Katie; she was a bit wobbly and needed to see her, but all of us (parents and grandparents in attendace) have now seen Katie and gone weak at the knees at the new member of the family.
As to Katie, she's gorgeous. At 3.6 kilos, she's a healthy weight, and, crucially, they have found no other problems on checking her (which means that there's less likelihood of genetic problems), She's been scanned and X-Rayed and is going to be in ICU for a while, but as she's stable & not in need of imminent surgery, she now has the advantage time. Time to let the lungs mature, time to get her past the shock of being born, time to scan her properly and work out whats going on in there, and, crucially, time to grow and become strong.
Much relief. There's a long way to go yet, but we've cleared the first dozen or so challenges.
Incidentally, she has ginger hair.
