...in the last 24 hours we have:
I don’t exclude the possibility that May will be gone by Christmas (hooray!), the Tories under their new PM will be formally going for Boles's "Norway Plus" deal (on the grounds that its the only deal that can get us out of the EU that can get through Parliament & also something the DUP can support), whilst the Labour party could be officially committed to a second referendum of "Mays deal or Remain".
All the plot threads are resolving at once!
- The Attorney General refusing to release his full & final official legal advice to the Commons, despite a binding vote in Parliament demanding this,
- Parliament triggering contempt proceedings against said Attorney General - and possibly other people - in Government. If successful, those held responsible will be banned from the Commons, so can't vote,
- The Attorney General pretending that his advice to the Government is confidential (which it isn't - Parliament in supreme, not the Executive) so instead gave a summary to Parliament,
- Despite an - admittedly superb - performance, the Attorney Generals summary left many MPs aghast at what Mays deal entailed - as it confirmed the UK would be left in limbo until the EU allows it to leave, with no legal guarantee this would be the case,
- Thanks to her authoritaian instincts, contempt of May, Mays Administration & Mays deal has reached 'critical' levels with 60+ Brexiteers – and the DUP - confirming they will vote against it, and many now openly questioning her leadership,
- The EU Supreme Court has (just) indicated that A50 can be withdrawn at any point by the UK, so for all the talk, 'no deal' is not a realistic threat,
- Confirmation from UK government lawyers confirming that Parliament has the right to instruct the government to withdraw their A50 notification,
- May touring the country, similar to that of a pre-election build-up & the Tory party issuing instructions to MPs that they 'need to be seen',
- May conducting a string of (atrocious) interviews across the media with her painfully trying to appear personable - or at least possessing a pulse - and abjectly failing,
- May doubling down on her 'my way or no deal chaos' approach, despite the fact that it has been confirmed that a) HMG can withdraw it, b) Parliament can instruct her to withdraw it (and c) 75% of her Cabinet have told her they would resign rather than let her inflict a no deal on the country - even before it became apparent that this would have to be a willful act of national harm),
